How to Pack Pictures for Moving

Artwork and framed photographs need special care during a move to prevent damage. Even a trusted moving company recommends taking extra precautions with these precious items. From family portraits to valuable artwork, proper packing techniques protect your pictures from scratches, breaks, and other damage during transit. Understanding the right materials and methods helps preserve your cherished memories and artwork throughout the moving process.

Gather Packing Supplies

Start by collecting specialized picture boxes sized for your artwork. You’ll need plenty of bubble wrap and packing paper to protect each piece. Get strong packing tape and quality markers for labeling. Corner protectors and cardboard sheets provide extra safety for framed items. Having the right supplies ready makes packing smoother and protects your pictures better than regular moving boxes.

Prepare Artwork

Take time to check each piece before packing. Note any existing damage and remove dust or dirt that might scratch surfaces during the move. For glass-framed pieces, put masking tape in an X pattern across the glass – this helps hold pieces together if breaks occur. Take off hanging hardware that might damage other items. Sort pictures by size and type to make packing more organized.

Wrap Pictures Safely

Start with glassine paper over the front of each picture to protect the surface. Add a layer of bubble wrap, keeping it snug but not too tight. Secure the wrapping with tape, making sure no adhesive touches the picture itself. Put corner protectors on framed pieces for extra protection. Keep larger pieces separate from smaller ones to prevent pressure damage. Your careful wrapping creates a protective shell around each piece.

Secure in Moving Boxes

Line box bottoms with cushioning material before adding pictures. Place wrapped pictures vertically in boxes – never lay them flat. Keep similar sizes together and put heavier pieces toward the back of the box. Fill empty spaces with packing material to prevent shifting. Don’t overpack boxes – pictures are often heavier than they look. Make sure each box closes completely without pushing against the contents.

Label and Handle With Care

Mark boxes clearly as fragile and note they contain pictures. Write which side should stay up and add any special handling instructions. Keep picture boxes away from heavy items during the move. Always lift these boxes from the bottom using both hands. Store them upright in a safe spot until unpacking. Good labeling helps everyone handle your pictures with the care they deserve.
