How to Pack Dishes for Moving
December 23, 2024
Properly packing dishes is crucial for ensuring your valuable kitchenware arrives safely at your new home. Every moving company knows that dishes are among the most fragile items to move, requiring extra attention to detail and proper packing materials to prevent breakage during transit.
Essential Packing Materials
Start by gathering professional-grade packing materials: dish packing kits, cell kits, sturdy boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, packing tape, and markers. Invest in double-wall boxes specifically designed for dishes. These materials provide better protection than newspaper, which can leave ink stains.
Prepare Your Packing Area
Set up a clean, flat workspace with enough room to organize your materials and dishes. Place cushioning material on the table to prevent accidental damage. Sort dishes by type and size to streamline the packing process and ensure proper weight distribution in boxes.
Individual Wrapping Techniques
Wrap each dish individually, using multiple sheets of packing paper. For plates, place paper between each dish and wrap sets of 2-3 together. Wrap bowls individually and nest them with protective layers between. Cups and glasses should be stuffed with paper and wrapped separately.
Box Loading Strategy
Place a thick layer of crushed paper at the bottom of each box. Pack plates and bowls vertically (like records), not stacked flat. This position provides better protection against breakage. Fill all empty spaces with crushed paper to prevent shifting. Keep boxes under 45 pounds.
Securing and Labeling
Seal boxes thoroughly with packing tape, including the bottom and top seams. Mark boxes as “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP” with arrows. Label contents and destination room. Number boxes and keep an inventory list to ensure nothing gets lost during the move.
