How to Move a Refrigerator
December 23, 2024
Moving a refrigerator requires careful planning and proper techniques of a reputable moving team to prevent damage to both the appliance and your home. This heavy, awkward appliance needs special attention to ensure safe transport and proper functioning at your new location.
Preparation Steps
Begin preparations 24-48 hours before moving by emptying the refrigerator and freezer completely. Defrost thoroughly to prevent water damage. Clean all surfaces with appropriate cleaners and dry completely. Remove all removable parts such as shelves and drawers, packing them separately.
Disconnecting Safely
Turn off the water supply if there’s an ice maker or water dispenser. Disconnect the water line carefully to prevent leaks. Unplug the unit and secure the power cord. Remove any water filters and clean the water lines according to manufacturer specifications.
Securing for Transport
Use appliance straps or strong rope to secure the doors closed during transit. Wrap the entire unit in moving blankets to protect the finish. Pay special attention to corners and handles. Use tape to keep the blankets in place, but never apply tape directly to the refrigerator’s surface.
Moving Equipment Needed
Gather necessary equipment including an appliance dolly with straps, moving blankets, work gloves, and helpers. Clear a path from the kitchen to the moving truck, measuring doorways and turns to ensure adequate clearance. Remove doors if necessary.
Proper Moving Techniques
Use the appliance dolly to carefully tilt and move the refrigerator. Keep it upright throughout the move; laying it on its side can damage the cooling system. When loading into the truck, secure it firmly against the wall or other stable items to prevent shifting.
