Tips For Safely Moving While Pregnant

Moving can be stressful for anybody — but even more so for expecting moms, who are already under increased mental, emotional and physical strain. If you are moving while pregnant, what can you do? How might you protect your health and the health of your little one?  Is there anything you need to know about how to move while pregnant? What tips can make the process a little easier?

To help answer these questions, here’s some key advice for planning your move, packing, reducing stress, recruiting help and more.

  1. Get medical advice. Because every pregnancy is unique, involving different challenges and complications, step one is to talk to your obstetrician, midwife or other health care provider about your move. Before you pick up that kitchen appliance, for example, it will matter where you’re at in your pregnancy. If you’re moving while pregnant in the third trimester (or first trimester), you’ll want to avoid lifting anything over a certain weight. If you have a higher risk of preterm labor, you probably won’t be allowed to help with moving at all. Remember that pregnancy is a time in life when you should ask for help.
  2. Plan as much as possible. The earlier you can start preparing for your move, the better, as this allows for a more low-key, less stressful experience. So, if possible, begin packing and organizing far in advance of the time you plan to relocate. Declutter and get rid of excess stuff to simplify what you have to move. If you can control the timing of your move, the most comfortable option will typically be moving while pregnant in the second trimester; this is when you’ll be past the worst sickness, but not too close to the end of your pregnancy.
  3. Take breaks. During the packing phase of your move, as well as on moving day, don’t forget to take breaks. During the weeks or months of preparation, stay active, do things you enjoy and get good sleep. All these stressbusters can go a long way toward strengthening you for your move.
  4. Get super organized. Pregnancy brain is real, so to avoid losing track of anything important during your move, get organized. Create tracking systems and lists, use an app or do whatever works for you to get on top of the various moving parts involved in a big transition.
  5. Pack must-haves for moving day. The day of your move, you won’t want to dig through boxes to find that medication you’re supposed to take with lunch — or the lunch itself for that matter. Create a go-to bag that has everything essential for your day: a change of clothes, snacks, water, toiletries, chargers, toilet paper, toys for older kids, etc. Then, whenever you need something, you’ll know exactly where to look.
  6. Protect your joints. If you are cleared to help with the move, remember to practice proper lifting techniques when transporting boxes and other items. It can make all the difference in protecting yourself against injury. It’s best to move lots of smaller, lighter loads than to push yourself to carry bigger, heavier boxes.
  7. Take precautions against toxic substances. If you need to do painting or intense cleaning as you leave your current home or move into your new one, make sure you avoid any harsh and potentially hazardous substances. This includes bleach and ammonia, for example. Either find someone else to tackle the job or choose all-natural products that are pregnancy safe.
  8. Buy baby gear after you’re settled. While it’s hard to fight the urge to nest even when you’re in the middle of a transition, you’ll lessen your moving load if you wait to buy baby supplies until you’re settled. Once you’re in your new home, you’ll be able to unpack purchases in their final destination without the extra hassle of moving them again.
